Meet Dr. Shannon Kirchmer (Chapel Hill, NC)

Shannon Kirchmer, O.D., received her Doctor of Optometry with honors from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing her degree, she served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where she received several awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal.

She was drawn to optometry through a family history of macular degeneration and appreciates the variety of care the field offers. Dr. Kirchmer provides comprehensive eye care with special interest in ocular disease, medical eye emergencies, and specialty contact lenses. She commonly treats keratoconus, irregular corneas, and post-surgical ectasias.

Outside of work, she enjoys running, spending time with family and friends, and baking sourdough bread. She has completed the Boston and Berlin marathons and continues to train for new races.
